Instructions for ReFinishing Tub and Sink Surfaces
"Went on easily, and was very forgiving"

"Went on easily, and was very forgiving"

We applied your product according to the instructions in the kit. We paid attention to the detail of prepping the surface as you suggest, and the product went on easily, and was very forgiving. It came out looking great! Thanks again.

Begin by reading the Klass Kote Product Data Sheets.

Clean the surface to be painted thoroughly with soap and water to remove any grease, grime or loose scale.  Make any necessary tub repairs before beginning to paint.  Remove tub fixtures and mask off as necessary.

A light sand paper can be used to remove any scores and imperfections on the surface.  If sanded, be sure to re-clean the surface removing any and all sanding dust. If surface inperfection
Is are numerous, consider first priming the surface using a Klass Kote Epoxy Primer Kit. (optional)

Shake, stir, and otherwise agitate the individual component cans (A & B) of the primer and/or top-coat.  Thoroughly mix equal parts (by volume) of components A & B into a separate container.

Mix only enough of components A & B together to apply several (light) coats to your surface area. Set the mixture aside to “induct” for a minimum of 30 minutes (up to 1 hour or more is OK). Room and surface temperatures should be close to 70°F.

After allowing the mixture to induct, add enough Epoxy Reducer #500 to obtain the optimal spray viscosity for your spray equipment.  Typical amounts of reducer required will be anywhere up to 1 part of epoxy reducer. For example:

  • 3 ounces of part-A Epoxy
  • 3 ounces of part-B Catalyst
  • Up to 3 ounces of epoxy reducer

One pint of mixed, reduced epoxy paint will cover approximately 25 – 30 sq. feet.  Working time (pot life) for the reduced mixture is measured in hours – up to 8 hours or more at 70°F - no need to rush!

Wipe the surface to be covered with a clean rag - lightly dampened with Klass Kote Epoxy Reducer #500.  If no Epoxy Reducer #500 is available, substitute a high grade lacquer thinner.  Allow any reducer left on the surface to flash off completely before proceeding.

Apply light, even, successive coats onto the surface.  Wait ½ hour – 1 hour between coats for “flash-off”.  Apply as many coats as necessary to get good, even, uniform coverage. As many as 2- 4 coats may be necessary.

If sanding the [primed] surface is required to remove surface imperfections, wait 6 – 8 hours (at 70°F) before sanding.  Be sure to remove all dust from the sanded surface by first blowing off, then wiping if necessary.

If possible, the epoxy top coat color should be applied over the primed surface before 18 hours. (re-coat window) This allows the prime coat and the top coat to “fuse” together and dry as one single coating. If more than 18 hours elapse between priming and top-coating, lightly sanding the primer should be done to increase adhesion of the top-coat onto the dried primed surface.

After applying the last top-coat, wait 4 – 7 days before returning the surface to service.  Ambient room temperature can be increased slightly to accelerate the curing process.  Try 75° – 80°F which will bring the coating to “full sward-hard cure” in 4 days rather than [up to] 7 days at 70°F.

Be sure to remove any and all over-sprayed paint or unwanted paint drips as soon as possible - before it has a chance to cure.  Use a cloth damply wet with Epoxy Reducer #500 or high-grade lacquer thinner.

If you are brush-applying Klass Kote Epoxy Paint, the mixture will require only enough epoxy reducer to allow the brush strokes to “flow out” smoothly (self-level).  Use only high quality, natural bristle brushes when applying Klass Kote Epoxy Paints.  Brushes can be cleaned with either Epoxy Reducer #500 or a high-grade lacquer thinner.
